Doppio is a double shot of espresso, a coffee prepared in the same way as a regular espresso, but in a double volume. Actually, the word doppio in translation from Italian means “double”.
To make doppio, you will need twice as much coffee as a regular espresso, and twice as much water:
Doppio is often the basis for other coffee specialties. For example, Glasse, Flat White, Frappe, Affogato are prepared on a double espresso. It is important to note that doppio should not be confused with Lungo, which also comes with 60 ml of water, but only 7-9g of coffee.
Did you know that a Doppio can also be prepared without an espresso machine? A lot of people around the world use different methods of making this drink, however, whichever you decide to choose, you will still be able to produce a good-tasting cup. We can single out Indian Style Doppio or Moka Pot Doppio. Both of them are pretty easy to prepare and we will go through each of them separately.
As we have already mentioned, there are many ways to brew doppio even if you don’t have an Espresso machine. However, it is extremely necessary to have the proper equipment so you are able to get the best taste and features of Doppio. The 2 devices that can be used for making it are a pourover and percolator. Let’s find out what makes them so special compared to the other ones.
This coffee machine is the best solution for all coffee lovers. The device combines the functions of a drip coffee maker with a glass jug and an espresso machine with a pressure of 15 bar. You can brew different types of coffee at the same time.
As the name itself suggests, with this method, you will have to slowly pour hot water into coffee grounds and that is pretty much it. With such a simple and cheap technique, producing a great-tasting Doppio is a dream come true.
Percolator is pretty much like a Moka Pot that gives you the ability to brew your coffee in a matter of minutes. Depending on which type of machine you decide to use, the recipes can be different. However, it should definitely be noted that with Percolator, you can get the closest taste to an Espresso which later can be transferred to a high-quality Doppio. Make sure to check out the best machines for yourself below.
We should point out that only 100% Arabica beans are recommended for brewing doppio.
Doppio is a very dense concentration of the flavor of the beans you choose, therefore almost all kinds of beans are great for it. However, I’d recommend going with something with a little less acidity, but incredible notes of other flavors like chocolate and cocoa. You can find those kinds of beans produced by countries below. Ethiopia coffee beans are the most suitable ones for preparing doppio, but at the same time, beans from Tanzania, Honduras, and Kenya will also help in preparing a decent drink.
