Arabica Mundo Novo is a hybrid of Typica and Bourbon, bred in Brazil in the 1940s. This is a fairly unpretentious and tenacious plant that gives a good harvest and aromatic beans of good quality, but is highly susceptible to major coffee diseases. The variety is widespread in South America, less commonly found in Central America and the Caribbean, and has a very similar taste profile to Typica beans.
Mundo Novo trees are very tall, with green or bronze leaves, medium-sized coffee cherries (approximately the same as Caturra, but smaller than SL28 or Maragogype). The recommended height for plantations is 5,200 feet above sea level (with distance from the Equator, it decreases to 3,200 feet).
Mundo Novo has a good, but not exceptional taste and aroma. It can be distinguished from other coffee beans very easily. The main advantage of the variety is its high yield, but this advantage is offset by a strong susceptibility to leaf diseases (such as leaf rust, coffee fruit disease, nematodes).
The variety begins to bear fruit in the third year after planting. Arabica Mundo Novo needs a lot of fertilizer. The recommended planting density is 3-4 thousand plants per hectare. We will further talk about its history and best coffee brands in our guide.
It is very interesting to check the history of Mundo Novo coffee beans, considering their unique characteristics and features. Mundo Novo is the result of a natural crossing of Bourbon and Typica (according to another version – Bourbon and Sumatra), the first variety was discovered in Mineiros do Tiete (São Paulo, Brazil) in 1943. Coffee was named after the municipality in which it began to be cultivated (today the region is called Urupês).
Mundo Novo is translated from Portuguese as “New World”, originally called Sumatra de Mundo Novo. Breeding was carried out from 1943 to 1952, immediately after that experimental batches of grains were distributed among Brazilian farmers, and in 1977 the variety appeared on the market. Mundo Novo is of great commercial importance to the economy of Brazil (this species accounts for 35% of all coffee production) and other South American countries such as Peru but is almost uncommon in Central America.
In Costa Rica, the variety appeared in 1952, but farmers were reluctant to plant these trees because of their too large size. The variety was brought to Guatemala in 1963-1964, and to Honduras in 1974. In Africa, Mundo Novo can be found in the Republic of Malawi.
Crossing Mundo Novo and Caturra yielded the popular Catuai cultivar. At the present time, Mundo Novo may not be the most popular option among coffee lovers, but still, a lot of people brew coffee from its coffee beans.

Roast: Medium |
Producer: Unleashed Coffee |

Mundo Novo Unleashed is an extremely sweet, perfectly balanced coffee. In the aroma, you can discover hazelnuts and caramel. In your cup of coffee, you can discover notes of cinnamon and dark chocolate. I would say that this one here is an ideal option for french press, and espresso machines. The price definitely justifies its quality, the package is excellent and the producer is a well-known one in the coffee industry. Basically, there is no reason why you should not purchase it.
In my opinion, if you want to make the most out of this coffee it is a good idea to have a piece of chocolate or something sweet alongside. Not only does the process of drinking a cup of coffee become better but you will also feel more satisfied.
Price: $19.95 (subject to change) |
Size: 32 oz |
Type: Catuai |
Roast: Dark |
Producer: COFFEE LLC |
Beans: Whole |
Dark Brazil Mundo Novo beans provide a high-quality cup. The drink made from Mundo Novo beans has a dense taste with low acidity. It is better to prepare the blend in an espresso machine or Moka pot coffee maker for a better flavor profile. On the palate, you will find dark berries and almonds. Due to the high content of oils in beans, I recommend that you regularly use tablets for coffee machines.
What I like about this coffee is its medium acidity. The roast is medium which is also perfect. The weight is pretty normal as well and you can keep the coffee for a long time. I think that coffee is always better served with an additional sweet and this one is no exception. All in all, this is a highly recommended coffee product that will not disappoint.
Price: $61.20 (subject to change) |
Size: 12.5 pounds |
Type: Mundo Novo |
Roast: Unroasted |
Producer: Smokin Beans |
Beans: Whole |
Mundo Novo Unroasted Beans is a slightly more expensive product than the abovementioned ones, but by all means, this one is definitely worth your attention. The producer Smokin Beans ensures its highest quality. The beans are unroasted and for a 12.5-pound package, you will have to pay $61.20. If you are looking for a new taste and something that you have not tried before, then this coffee is worth a shot.
Preparing this coffee is possible in different coffee makers. I would suggest using an espresso machine, which is more or less the most suitable option for Mundo Novo Unroasted Beans. Additionally, this product will be a great choice for anyone that loves to control the settings of their coffee – with unroasted beans, you will have the possibility to make a cup to your own liking including roast and brew types.
