How to Make a Macchiato at Home – A Simple Step-By-Step Guide

Macchiato – also known as a “stained coffee” is the name of a coffee drink beloved by many. It is made simply from milk and espresso. Bartenders prepare macchiatos in different ways, but they take a simple scheme as a basis: one serving of coffee and a small amount of milk. The drink is similar to a small cappuccino, but with the same ingredients used to make a cappuccino, the macchiato tastes much stronger and more aromatic.

To make a macchiato, you need the following ingredients:

Here is a detailed guide on how to make macchiato at home:

  1. Whisk the milk using the steam nozzle of the coffee maker, just like for cappuccino. In the absence of a special apparatus, hot milk must be whipped with a mixer until a thick foam is obtained.
  2. Pour over the glass and slowly pour freshly brewed espresso.
  3. Some put a glass of milk in the coffee maker and pour coffee. Thus, we get a three-layer drink.
  4. The top is white foam with a small speck of coffee. The drink looks insanely beautiful and is the best drunk immediately after preparation.

How to Make a Macchiato Without a Machine – 2 Ways

Macchiato is best made when you have a coffee machine and there are several reasons behind that, however, we should note that it is also possible to make one without an additional device. There are 2 ways: Indian Style Macchiato and General Style Machiatto. You can check out recipes down below.

Indian Style Machiatto

Indian Style Machiatto is something that I enjoy the most. The main reason behind it is the fact that it is simple to prepare and you get a good-tasting cup in a matter of minutes. So, without further ado, here is what you have to do:

General Style Macchiato

General style Macchiato is something that you might come across in cafe shops near you. It is also easy to prepare, however, you might need some manual brewers with it. Just follow these simple steps for the best results:

Recommended Machines to Use for Brewing Machiatto

A macchiato made with the coffee machine will help you discover new tastes and unique recipes. The good news is that an automatic coffee machine with a macchiato function saves you the trouble of heating or whipping milk. It is enough to choose your favorite drink from the menu and press the button. The machine brews the espresso itself, then gently mixes it with the milk in the correct proportion, while the automatic cappuccino maker produces a thick and dense milk froth – the perfect addition to the classic macchiato.

Espresso Machine – The Classic Version

An espresso machine is a classic version of preparing macchiato and it should be noted that it is used actively for preparing the coffee. The brewing process is pretty simple, however, you need to keep in mind that your machine should be clean – Make sure that the portafilter does not have any coffee grounds left in it, so the taste of your Macchiato is not ruined. If you don’t have an Espresso machine, you can check out our article of best Espresso makers down below.

French Press – Pretty Straightforward

Making macchiato in a French press is also easy. However, there are some tips that I want to give you before you start the brewing process. First, the coffee must be fresh – In that case, coffee made with a French press will produce a really tasty and aromatic drink.

Second, you need a good grinder. To extract coffee correctly in a French press, a very even grind is required. You won’t be able to achieve this in a conventional knife grinder, because the grinding will be too fine.

Percolator – Best Espresso Without Espresso Machine

Another recommended method for making Macchiato is a Percolator, which is one of the simplest tools available for your coffee. In the upper part of the machine, there is a hard filter with small cells, into which coffee of medium or coarse grinding is poured. As it heats up, the water rises through the tube and enters the chamber with the ground coffee, then the finished drink flows through the filter mesh into the main container.

The process of circulating hot water through a filter with ground coffee can be repeated an unlimited number of times until the required strength is reached and the machine is turned off. As a result, you get a nice drink with all the necessary tastes that you need to discover in a classic Macchiato.

What Beans are Recommended for Brewing Macchiato?

Once you decide to brew your own Macchiato at home, I would recommend using only 100% Arabica beans. Additionally, it is the best idea that the beans you purchase are slightly more acidic because then the milk does not dilute them too much. If you can’t figure out what to buy, you can check out the list of recommended beans down below.
