Hawaii coffee history starts back in the 19th century where this beverage was introduced by way of Brazil. For now, Hawaiian coffee is on the list of the state’s top agricultural products with an annual production of 8+ million pounds. In fact, Hawaii is the only state in the United States where coffee is grown.

The most popular coffee type is Kona, which only grows there and is super unique. Those that appreciate a different taste of coffee know what is so special about this variety. Kona coffee beans grow in a climate that is perfect for coffee. Rich volcanic soil along with sunny mornings and cloudy afternoons, give Kona a wonderful taste. Typical Kona coffee is fruity, light, and sweet with the notes of nuts and spice. However, this is not the only type you will be able to discover in Hawaii, the varieties grown here are:

Kona Typica Arabica Blue Mountain

Due to the fact that Hawaiian coffee is somehow very unique, it won’t be a surprise to say that it is popular around the world. Luckily, with the help of Amazon, you can easily get Hawaiian coffee online and enjoy it in your own kitchen.

Where Do They Grow Hawaii Coffee?

Currently, Hawaii is home to hundreds of coffee farms, starting from the small art town of Holualoa, ending with Kealakekua – many of these places even offer public tours for visitors that are interested in the process of coffee growing. By visiting growing coffee farms, you can learn interesting facts about the harvesting process and get more familiar with how your coffee is made from scratch. Currently, we are going to focus on two main regions that are known for Kona growing – Hualalai and Mauna Loa.

Hualalai

Hualalai is an active volcano on the island of Hawaii where much of Kona coffee crops grow. Early coffee merchant Henry Nicholas Greenwell’s family held a vast ranch on the volcano’s western flank – That’s where it all started from. Right now, there are a lot of farmers that own companies producing coffee exactly from this place.

One such kind is Hualalai Estate that is grown in volcanic soil at 1700 feet above sea level. When you think about the environment that this coffee grows in, it actually makes you super excited to try it out or even see nature yourself. In fact, the majority of the best Hawaiian coffees are grown in Hualalai. All in all, we can definitely say that this active volcano contributes a lot to Hawaiian coffee.

Mauna Loa

Mauna Loa is another volcano located on the island of Hawai’i. By the way, did you know that this has historically been considered the largest volcano in the world? And yes, believe it or not, coffee grows here. Doesn’t it sound amazing?

We all know that coffee requires a unique mix of water, sun, and soil. It can only be grown effectively in a few spots throughout the world. The environment and climate in Hawaii’s Kona regions along with mineral-rich volcanic soils of Mauna Loa’s steep slopes, provide ideal growing conditions for some of the world’s best-tasting coffee.

Mauna Loa contains a lot of independent coffee farms – usually, they are tiny and range somewhere between 3 and 7 acres. Traditionally, you might mostly come across family businesses.

I am happy to start this list with Wings of The Morning Kona, which is truly a 10-star product with its amazing quality and taste. Personally, I think that this medium-roasted, dark coffee with a smooth flavor is one of the best coffees available on the Hawaiian market.

What makes this product so special is that the brand and people behind it put a lot of work into making it. Almost all the work is done by hand and handpicking (instead of machine picking) results in low acidity, distinctive taste, and simply, high quality.

Royal Kona coffee is mostly referred to as an extra fancy drink that is used to describe the highest grade of this product. Before we get into what this coffee tastes like, let’s take a look at the manufacturer.

Best Machines for Brewing Kona Coffee at Home

How do you like your coffee? Do you prefer to use special machines that make this beverage for you in a matter of seconds without you putting any effort? Or do you prefer to prepare it yourself and test out different techniques and methods? Of course, I know that machine-made coffee tastes good too, however, the process is much more enjoyable when you actually are involved in it. Down below, I will suggest a few ways of brewing your favorite Kona coffee beans.

Pourover – The Best Way to Brew Kona Coffee

I believe that pour over is one of the best ways to brew your coffee. The method I am going to describe to you is mostly used by cafes, however, once you have all the necessary instruments, you can easily make it at home all by yourself. So, here’s the list of things that you are going to need:

Moving on to the brewing process, here are the steps that you need to follow:

  1. Take your scale and start off with grinding 0.8 ounces of your coffee.
  2. Pre-wet the filter and then dump the water out.
  3. Once the water’s out, add coffee grounds to your brewer
  4. Pour water to moisturize all the coffee grounds in the brewer and let that sit for 30-45 seconds
  5. Slowly continue pouring water from the center and then go in circles all the way to the edge
  6. Once you’ve added all the water, finish it up with a gentle stir
  7. When the water is drained through, remove the filter, and voila! Your coffee is ready.

As you can see, this brewing method is pretty simple, however, in the process, you might come across some difficulties that can make your coffee taste bitter. But don’t worry, after a few tries and some experimenting, you will definitely be able to get the best possible result out of this pour over method.

Moka Pot – Tried and Tested

Another method we are going to discuss today is Moka Pot which has been tried and tested by me pretty much hundreds of times. If you’re doing it for the first time, I recommend brewing a few coffees to season the pot before preparing one for a drink. So, here is the list of things you are going to need:

  1. A Moka Pot
  2. Coffee beans (0.8-1 ounces)
  3. Warm water (5 ounces)

As you can see, there are not a lot of things that you need in order to prepare your coffee, which makes this method one of the easiest and most comfortable. Let’s get into the making process itself:

  1. Grind your coffee
  2. Take the bottom part of your Moka Pot and fill it with warm water
  3. Place coffee grounds in the funnel
  4. Assemble the Moka Pot back
  5. Place your pot on the stove with medium heat
  6. Once you hear gurgling sounds, it means that your coffee is done!

Moka Pots are a great tool for Hawaiian coffee beans. They help concentrate the flavor so much more without having to deal with the residue grounds. Percolators act pretty much like an Espresso Machine, but cheaper and faster.
