Cappuccino vs Latte – What are The Differences?

Cappuccino and latte are the most popular Italian coffee drinks. Hot milk is used in the preparation of each of them. The difference between the two is that more steamed milk is used for lattes than for cappuccino. In a 350 ml cappuccino cup, approximately 175 ml is milk and milk froth.

Cappuccino vs Latte – Comparing Ingredients

Cappuccino and latte are seemingly similar drinks. The easiest way to tell the difference is to cook each one. The thing is that the principle of preparation is different, although the ingredients of the two drinks are actually the same. That is why, if you have little experience, you can easily make a cappuccino instead of a latte, or vice versa. Or even cook something in between.

Cappuccino

Cappuccino is made with espresso, hot milk, and steamed milk froth. The correct consistency and temperature of the milk are very important. The milk is steamed, which saturates it with tiny air bubbles. This creates a so-called “microfoam” that gives the milk a pleasant texture and sweetness. Hot frothed milk is poured into the espresso, resulting in a 2 cm layer of milk froth. Cappuccino has options for making more milk: cappuccino chiaro and cappuccino scuro. And the Freddo Cappuccino variant is a cold version of this coffee drink with a small layer of cold-frothed milk on top.

Latte

Latte is made from coffee and hot steamed milk. Coffee can be replaced with another basic drink – tea, mate, or matcha. Italians often prepare caffè latte for breakfast. Coffee is brewed using a Moka pot and poured into a cup of hot milk. There is no froth in the Italian latte. Outside Italy, caffe latte is usually prepared as follows: 1/3 espresso, 2/3 steamed milk. Milk foam with a thickness of 5 mm should be present on the surface of the drink. Another version of latte is made from strong coffee or dark (Italian) roasted coffee and milk brought to a boil in a 1: 1 ratio.
