Espresso Masterclass: How to Brew The Perfect Cup

Making espresso at home is a perfect way of starting your day. It is a bit of a hard skill that is totally worth mastering if you truly love coffee. By following our few easy steps, you will be able to make barista-level espresso on your own in just a few minutes.

  1. Preheat your cup with boiling water
  2. Get your favorite coffee beans and finely grind them
  3. Pat the beans down neatly in your puck.
  4. Attach the puck and start brewing
  5. Wait for a few minutes, and you have a perfect morning cup of espresso made in just a few minutes.

Although simple, the process of making a perfect cup of espresso is still very complex. There are a lot of things that the taste of your final beverage depends on. Most importantly, it is coffee beans that you are using. Deciding which beans to use is a very personal decision.

In general, the best beans for Espresso are medium-dark to dark roast as they are more soluble and extract quickly. Thanks to their richness in oil, these beans are more likely to produce a richer cream, which is a very important part of espresso.

How to Make an Espresso Without An Espresso Machine

While having an Espresso machine is a life-saver for espresso lovers, it is totally possible to make espresso without an actual Espresso machine. There are many ways of making a perfect espresso drink without a machine, but my favorite ones are Indian-style espresso and Moka Pot espresso.

Indian Style Espresso

Indian Espresso is known for being very rich, creamy, and frothy. Here is a step-by-step guide for you:

  1. Start by grinding around 1-1.5 tbsp worth of coffee.
  2. Add a dash of warm water and start mixing it up. Mix the coffee really well around a minute or two before a creamy suitable form.
  3. Boil 1 small cup’s worth of water.
  4. Add the mixture into the water, and stir until it fully dissolves in water.

This is it, by following these easy espresso-making tips, you will have a perfect cup of espresso in under 10 minutes.

Moka Pot Espresso

One of the easiest and most used methods for making espresso at home is using a Moka Pot. This pot is very easy to get and usually costs somewhere around $20-30.

  1. Start by boiling water to have your coffee faster.
  2. After the water boils, fill the bottom part of the Moka Pot with water right to the safety valve.
  3. Then, grind down your favorite beans to medium-fine, coarser than you would use for an espresso machine, but finer than for a drip coffee maker state,
  4. Fill the Moka Pot with your coffee. You do not have to push your coffee down, just put it in there. For a regular size Moka Pot, 2-3 teaspoons of coffee should be enough.
  5. After this, put the top side of the Moka Pot to the bottom part and put it on medium heat, and wait for the pressure to bring the water up to the top chamber. By using pre-boiled water, your coffee will be made a lot quicker, and the coffee won’t burn either.

Recommended Machines to Use for Brewing Espresso

We have already talked about one of the most useful tools for making espresso in your home, Moka Pot. But, there are many other methods as well. Below, we will discuss two of the most popular tools for making a perfect espresso at home, Pour Over and Percolator.

Pourover – Cheap and Easy

While working on this Espresso guide, we found that these cone-shaped coffee makers are very easy to use and you can get them almost anywhere. To make espresso with Pour Over, you will place the cone on top of the mug, add a paper filter, put your ground coffee on the paper, and slowly add pre-boiled water on top of the coffee.

You can use finely ground coffee for this method. Although it won’t have the main characteristics of espresso, like a crema on the top, for example, it still tastes really good and is amazing for a quick energy boost. This is probably one of the easiest ways of making coffee.

Percolator – As Close to an Espresso As Possible

While percolators were not made to brew espresso, it is perfectly possible to do so. Percolators are known for being able to make a powerful cup of coffee, which is very close to the actual espresso.

Making espresso step by step with Percolator is very similar to the process of making espresso with Moka Pot, with a few differences. For making espresso with Percolator, you are recommended to use coarse ground coffee.

Depending on the desired strength level of espresso you want, you should let the percolator make coffee for 7 to 10 minutes. This way, the final product will be much stronger and closer to the actual cup of coffee made with an espresso machine.

What Beans are Recommended for Brewing Espresso?

Espresso is known for having a very dense concentration of the flavor of the beans you choose. Because of this, almost all kinds of beans can be a great choice for espresso – the final decision is yours to make, depending on personal preferences.

However, personally, I would recommend going with something with a little less acidity, but richer notes of other flavors like chocolate and cocoa. In general, it is always better to use only 100 percent Arabica beans, as they tend to be the best for Espresso.

Below, you can check some different types of beans produced by countries all around the world. All of the coffee beans listed below can be amazing for an espresso recipe.
